I agree... Perhaps the problem isn't with the fact that there is invasions,
but how they are handled? When two human wars go on for that amount of time,
dissent often starts growing, people getting bored of the war and wanting to
explore new avenues (or new enemies). The problem with invasions is that you
can't simply sign a ceasefire and move on to other stuff, hand out
concessions if needed, it's imposed upon you, and you have to wait 'till
everyone else is done to finally be able to finish it. I'm not whining, I've
had a great amount of fun with one of my characters there who was a
councillor and eventually a ruler, before getting killed, but since then I
haven't been able to participate in the invasion, just live the
consequences... it's that feeling of powerlessness that is getting to most,
I believe. Even if I was one of Arcane's most trusted, and played a good
part in the Vlaanderen rebellion... there was hardly much to it. An
opportunity, a few letters, bam. Total letters... in the single digits,
total time, less than a week. For the rest, I'm just living passivly
avoiding the daimons, as there's nothing of interest that way. But, this is
not the point I'm trying to get to.
The thing is... yes, it's always been that way, and people have always
complained... But why are these complaints utterly ignored? (back a few
months when many were complaining, many claimed to enjoy the invasion,
myself included, is this still true, or has the intrigues left the island
along with Summoner, who'se player I praise highly). So, why so brutal, why
so *long*? Okay, brutal I can understand, that's all fine. It's the reason I
started playing on Belu after all, outside-induced destruction prevents
EC-like stagnation. But why so long? Would it really be that unthinkable to
make them shorter and more frequent? A permanent inhuman realm, for all I
care, as long as they don't require the attention of most of the continent
for such a long freaking time in a row. Localize them a bit more... "Oh,
there's an invasion in the south-east!", and a few months later, "Oh,
another has appareared in the west", a little later "Oh, the two firsts have
been defeated, but some appeared in the central regions." It feels pointless
to have to wait a prepare for a foe you know you'll have to fight, but which
you can't do anything else than wait for because his troops come from
unknown locations (and those known from far-away places), there are no lands
to raid, realms to cripple, and leaving your realm defenseless would just
tempt them to take the opportunity to make a horde spawn on your backdoor.
As it is now, it's little better preparing and waiting for an uninteresting
war than it is to fight it itself.
