[Discuss] Archers in battle

Hi all,
I have questions about archers in battles.

The battlefield is split into 11 columns, let's call them 1 to 11, left 
to right.


Scenario 1:

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11
........E...A..........

Here is the enemy (infantry) in column 5, and my archer unit in column 
7.  What should happen if I have a range of 2?

- I fire?
- I advance to get better shots?
- I retreat away from close combat?
- I hold my fire?

What about if I have a range of 3?



Scenario 2:

........E.....A........

What about if I'm a bit further away - what now?

- I fire?
- I advance to get better shots?
- I retreat away from close combat?
- I hold my fire?

What about if I have a range of 3?




Scenario 3:

What about if I'm a bit closer - what now?

- I fire?
- I advance to get better shots?
- I retreat away from close combat?
- I hold my fire?

What about if I have a range of 3?

..........I.I..........

Here, it's the same as before, only now there are a few infantry units 
on my side getting in the way a bit.  Same question, what should I do?


- I fire?
- I advance to get better shots?
- I retreat away from close combat?
- I hold my fire?

What about if I have a range of 3?

........I.I............

And finally, there's loads of my fellow infantry in the way - what now?

- I fire?
- I advance to get better shots?
- I retreat away from close combat?
- I hold my fire?

What about if I have a range of 3?



If someone could answer those for me it would be helpful - I'm rather 
confused by archers just at the moment.
