Note: the following is not meant as a specific criticism of the exile
feature, or any other particular feature of the game, but rather as a
philosophical discussion.
Historically, the King would not only have had the power of a number of
high positions (dukeships, etc) himself, he would also have had the
power of an army, would he not?

Exactly. The king was a king because he also had a large bat to club
people into submission with. Yes, it might have taken a while but it
could be done. If we are going to make BM follow the lead of the
historical then we need to at least give kings the ability to act like
it. As of now kings have nothing more then words and everyone in the
game knows it so they are nothing more then paper tigers since they have
no land and no income and no army.
