We don't *need* IC mentors.  We don't need to teach their characters  
things; we need to teach the *players* how to play the game.

Or, alternatively, if you want your character to be an IC mentor to  
another character, there is absolutely nothing stopping you from doing  
so.  RP teaching him how to swing a sword, the finer points of high  
court etiquette, or whatever, and that will give you absolutely  
everything you need.

As Rob has been saying, the most appropriate way to mentor is to teach  
the *players* everything they need to know in the most IC manner  
possible.
