I think you're misunderstanding somewhat the nature of the family  
history information.

It's not just written in some dusty tome somewhere.  There are many,  
many minor (NPC) nobles who spend their *entire lives* doing *nothing*  
but keeping track of this kind of information.  Our characters would  
certainly know it if they stopped for 30 seconds to check, even if  
they didn't know it offhand.

So yes, your character can deny having ever been to Keplerstan, but  
he'd better have a bloody good explanation for why someone with his  
name and face was there during a period when there's no record of him  
having been doing anything else (because, well, he *was* there).

Never underestimate the noble social information network.
