1) To keep busy. Once a region is at perfect and not too far from the
capital, visiting it two or three times a month is more than enough to keep
it in good shape. First I tried being a mentor to keep busy, but I had one
student in three months so went back to being a knight.

2) To monitor what the marshal is ordering my knights so I can react in time
when the army no longer serves the best interests of my region. Important
for example when your region gets overrun by an undead horde.

I can't speak for dukes or rulers. But I assume it's for comparable reasons.
