Fetz arrived in Hosiel as the day was flagging and night was taking its hold
on the small rural region.
Instead of heading to the village with the largest dock, he headed to one a
few miles south of it. His many years as a spy and assassin-for-hire gave
him the required skills to know where the more seedier parts of society
flourished. He figured he'd have a better chance of finding someone willing
to deliver the letter to Beluaterra there than in the area where the more
law-abiding captains did their business.
Before arriving at the village, he changed his appearance. He was
well-versed in disguise and though he had not used his skills in some time,
he found they were not rusty. Arriving in the village, he headed towards the
docks and went into one of the local bars. He sat at the bar sipping his ale
and watched the room.
After some time assessing the situation, he ordered two more ales and he
walked over to a table occupied by another man. "I'm looking to hire a
captain for a dangerous run," he said as he set down the drink in front of
the man.
"There aren't many captains in. Go to see Captain Krieger. He's in port.
Three blocks north, two east. Number 5. Tell him Carl sent ya."
Fetz headed out thinking this was a little too easy. He brought a few of his
men with him to the house. It was not a house he would have thought a
captain would own. *Perfect.*
Fetz knocked on the door and, when the door was opened, was greeted with a,
"Waddayawant?"
He looked the aging man up and down, "I'm looking for a captain willing to
go on a dangerous run. I must be at the wrong house," he said as he started
turning around.
"Nae, nae, ye found tha right house. I be Cap'n Krieger. Come in and let's
talk business." Fetz turned slowly back around and then came into the house
after which the captain called, "Daeni, bring sum ale fer this fine
gen'leman."
They moved to the sitting room and Daeni came in bearing the ale. A finer
wench would be hard to find. Fetz's men stood up a bit straighter and looked
her up and down.
"So, what's this job ye be wantin' done?"
"I have a letter to deliver to someone on Beluaterra."
The captain's eyes showed some fear, "I be familiar wit Beluaterra. Not a
place anyone who be sane wants to go."
"That's what I hear. I hear that gold can be a good fear-breaker, though,"
he said as he jingled his purse.
"That she be," said the captain with a smile.
"I'm going to need you to deliver the letter and wait for a reply."
"Have ye heard what be on Beluaterra? Nae jus' monsters or the walking dead.
I hear o' daimons. Real daimons bigger 'n houses roaming tha land. This
ain't gonna be no ord'nary run."
Fetz finished his ale and Daeni went to get more, "So I hear. And what would
you think is a fair deal?"
"50 gold to start and 50 gold when I get back."
Daeni returned with the ale. "That's preposterous. But I'll tell you what,
I'll make you a deal you can't refuse." He motioned to his men, "30 gold
now," Daeni's scream was muffled as the men grabbed her and covered her
mouth, "and Daeni back unharmed when you return."
The captain made to rise from his seat but two swords leveled at his throat
had him retaking his seat before his ass had even left the cushion
completely. "Tell ye wha', I'll do it fer free if ye take me son instead. He
lives just down tha stree--"
"I said it was a deal you couldn't refuse, Krieger. I want the ship
outfitted properly. You'll need the gold," Fetz said as he tossed the pouch
of gold onto the man's lap. "Like I said, you follow the deal, you get her
back unharmed. You bring others into this and you don't." Fetz put the
letter, in a waterproof scroll case, down on the table. "It gets delivered
to screndt2 Faracan. Last I was there, he was a priest in Enweil."
"Enweil? That place be huge!"
"From what I hear, most realms aren't huge anymore. But you should count
your lucky stars it was a large realm. More chance of it still existing at
all," he said as he, his men and Daeni in tow left the house.
