The crispy autumn wind blowed in the docks when Nina arrived to Giask
City once again. The last time she had been there, she had payed her
stay with deliveries, like she was used to make at home, and it seemed
she would have to do the same again, this time. Walking slowly,
absorbing the sea scent, the wench counted her coins, and considered
arming her tent. A short yell nearby called her attention, and the
dark haired woman turned to see a small boy running towards her.

Frowning, she said, loud enough for him to hear as he arrived.

- Oh, no... not the puppy-boy again!

The boy laughed and hit her in the arm, lightly.

- Not a puppy! I did grow some centimeters since you were last here,
lady-hunter!
- Say you're not a puppy again and I'll call my Brandon friend to
teach you a thing or two... - she winked, but the boy shrunk, with a
troubled face.
- Oh, no, don't call him, he gives me the creeps...

Messing with the boy's hair, Nina smiled.
- I won't, he's very far away... Now, can you find me somewhere to
stay? And what were you doing in the docks, boy?

Chatting, she let her lead the way through the city streets, amazed at
how much it had grown and how well the rebuilding of old marks had
been done. With relief, she also noticed the Other One didn't seem to
be anywhere close to bother her, that night...

Perhaps you should consider replying to my letters next time. You'll
be sitting here until your week-long sentence is over, unless you can
somehow convince me to let you go earlier.

While being dragged by the guards to be set free, Nina was quite
curious. The Royal Arbitrator had seemed very set on keeping her
inside his dungeons for a long time, and now, even before she could
master a letter (ooc: you can't say or write anything on your first
day in jail :P), was letting her go.

When the guards left her outside the castle's gates, the hunter, glad
that she was in a fine dress and the jail hadn't taken away the
perfume of her recent bath, turned, bowed, and asked for permission to
seek an audience with the lord of the city.

The guards seemed confused, but escorted her back inside. On the
judge's office, Tai was announced, and entered the room, presenting
the noble with a deep courtesy. After the Duke had finally lifted his
eyes from his paperwork to look at her, and in quick words given her
the right to speak, she stood up, and approached a bit, so she
wouldn't have to talk too loudly.

- Royal Arbitrator Sforza, your excellency asked me a question
earlier, and I did not have the chance to answer before you set me
free. This servant of yours did come back to Pian lands in response to
a letter from your Excellency, though I did not think your Excellency
would have any interest in hearing back from us, humble hunters.

Though she knew she shouldn't look a noble in the face, her eyes
couldn't leave the man in front of her. It seemed he had something
behind him... Something... she couldn't put her finger on it, but it
seemed at the same time familiar... Like he also had Another One
inside of him. Yet, the goddess was quiet inside Nina.

- Your Excellency, may I ask why was I set free so soon and also if
your Excellency needs the services of this humble hunter of yours, Tai
of Poryatu?

Ludovico eyed the commoner in front of him. Normally, men of her type
looked at the ground when talking to him, but she was different, she
looked straight at him. Normally this would have been more than enough
for Ludovico to have his guard beat her, but he refrained from doing
so. Instead, he reached into his tunic and pulled out the White
Necklace of Ice, dangling it in front of Nina Tai.

"You know what this is, Nina?", Ludovico asked.

Nina examined the necklace and shook her head. "I have never seen such
a necklace before, Your Excellency."

Ludovico tucked the necklace back under his shirt. "That's because
there are none like it. This is the White Necklace of Ice. To me it's
just a piece of exquisite jewellery, but to those who lived here
before the Immigration, it is a relic of sorts. I've read in a book
that some pagans worship the Elements themselves, and that the gods
crafted several magical items. My necklace appears to be one of them.
Are you starting to see where I'm going with this, Nina Tai of
Poryatu?", he asked in a smug tone.

Again, she shook her head. "No, Your Excellency, I'm afraid not."

Ludovico sighed and cursed silently. "Slow-witted thugs...", Then, he
spoke up again. "I want you to find out if there are more of these
items, and if there are, find them and bring them to me. If you do
well, there just may be a reward in it for you. If you fail me, then
it will be back to picking trash up off the ground and hunting
monsters... provided I don't get my hands on you first.", he said as
he waved his hand at the door.

Nina turned around and started walking, but Ludovico told her to stop.
"And if you ever look me straight in the eyes again without being
asked to, I'll have yours torn out of your head. Now get out of my
office.", he hissed at her.

And then Nina was set free on Askileon. Remembering an announcement of
a few weeks before, she headed to Askileon Purlieus, where there
should be gold to be earned...
