Jens and his Axemen were sitting around the fire, enjoying their evening
meal of roasted goat, when they heard it.

"Horse!" they shouted in unison. "Comin' dis way!"

Being Makarians one and all, it took no orders from their troop leader for
each man to know exactly what to do. Scampering like rabbits into the brush
on either side of the path, they waited silently.

A lone horseman rode into view. Seeing the campfire, the figure stopped and
started to climb down off the horse.

The Axemen leaped forward with blood-curdling shouts. The horse whinnied in
fear, and tried to gallop away, but the attackers were too much for it. Down
went horse and rider in a tangle of cloaks, reins and saddlebags.

The horse was already cleaned and roasting in strips over the fire when one
of the men took a closer look at the unconscious rider.

"Hey, Jens!" he called out. "Dis here's a woman!" He looked closer. "An'
she's wearin' a broach wit' da same symbol dat we gots on our shields!"

Jens ran over with a worried look. "Ah, jeez! " he cried. "You boys jest
killed da Duchess a Eno an' ate her horse. Da King ain't gonna like dat,
don'tcha know!"
