A peddler, returning from his day at the market, is almost crushed by a
gargoyle falling from the sky. He glances at the building whence it came. It
was an abandoned building. He rushed over to the church across the street,
the one with the tallest, free-standing, pinnacle in Aix, to inform someone
of the danger of the dilapidated building across the street.
The peddler entered the church. "I've seen a monster fall from the building
across the way!" he shouted to the priest who came to meet him.
The priest eyes the building across the way. He was old enough to remember
that building. 40 years earlier, it had the highest spire in all of Aix. The
building was covered in gargoyles. Evil things. When the church had chosen
their site, they ensured that the building would be closed. It had not taken
long. They were obviously an influential church and building the spire
taller than the other had allayed a lot of the arguments that the tallest
building should not be brought down.
But being shut down and being destroyed were two different things. But
finally, the building was slated for destruction. The coming of the
*real*monsters had helped push the issue at court. No one in the city
liked the
monsters anymore. It reminded too many of them of the monsters that had
killed their families or chased them from their homes.
The priest turned to the peddler, "Fear not, my son. Come. Pray and give
thanks to the gods for sparing your life and for destroying one of those
evil creatures."
