Duke Screndt had lived his whole life by a code. The code demanded a lot
from Screndt. He lived for the code and the honour it espoused. He had
fought in battles that he knew were to be losses in numbers, but victories
of honour. He had taken the Dukeship though all he really wanted was to be
on the battlefield. He had kept the Dukeship and taken a role behind the
scenes for the sake of Perdan, to whom he had pledged an oath. He had
devoted himself to his City and his Duchy, sacrificing his time that he
should have spent finding a wife for the sake of Perdan. He was an old man
who had sacrificed his life for his realm. A realm that was a pale shadow of
what it used to be.

He turned back to Queen Evangeline to see her skirt catch the wind and blow
her backwards. There wasn't much room on the rooftop, it was no more than
three meters wide, closer to two. She didn't have to go far before her foot
was over the ledge.

He knew what his code and his oath demanded of him.
