In the heart of Dimwood, outside the estates of Sir Maelg, Lord of
Dimwood, Prince of Perdan, a large group of armed soldiers marched up to
the gates. The group of men was accompanied a train of pack horses, and
a few wagons. The troops arranged themselves in orderly lines across the
front lawn of the estate. A single palfrey rode in front of the ranks
until it reached the center. The horse slowed to a stop, and Lady
Balkeese dismounted. She stood in front of the ranks of men and waited,
facing the estate. The men behind her looked nervous. Some of them paled
in anticipation of the rumoured events about to take place.
In a minute or two, a servant emerged from the estate the group
assembled on the front lawn. The servant approached Lady Balkeese, bowed
deeply, and spoke: "m'Lady, welcome to the estates of Prince Maelg,
Count of Dimwood. What may I do for you, m'Lady?"
"I am looking for a scribe by the name of Breck. Bring him forth."
The servant turned and hurried back into the estate. Lady Balkeese
raised her hand and gestured toward one of the wagons. Two men emerged
and hurried toward her. One man carried a few small boxes and what
appeared to be a large canvas stretched across a frame. The other
carried a tall wooden tripod. The two men stopped next to Lady Balkeese.
The man with the tripod rapidly assembled it, then set the framed canvas
atop it. The other man open his boxes and puttered around with an
assortment of brushes and pigments. Lady Balkeese addressed the man with
the brushes. "Watch closely. It is imperative that you capture the scene
with the utmost accuracy and detail." The man nodded in acknowledgment.
A few minutes later the servant reappeared from the estate with a second
man in tow. The second man wore the livery of House Vallejo. They
approached the Lady Balkeese and bowed deeply.
"Are you the scribe named Breck?"
"Yes, m'Lady."
"Very well. Come with me."
Ldy Balkeese led Breck over toward her Palfrey, and positioned him
behind the horse. Breck looked nervous. Lady Balkeese turned and walked
up alongside the horse. Abruptly she raised her riding crop and switched
the horse across its flanks. The horse whinnied in protest... and kicked.
There was an abrupt ~WHACK~, followed immediately by an ~OOMF~, a groan,
and then, after a short pause, a ~THUMP~.
Behind the horse, Breck lay on the ground, doubled over, clutching his
crotch.
Balkeese stroked the horse's flanks and murmured soothing words of
apology to the horse for the undeserved switching. She fished in a
pocket and pulled forth a few bits of carrot and fed the horse the small
treats. It took them eagerly, the incident already forgotten. Apology
complete, Lady Balkeese mounted the palfrey and wheeled it around.
"Breck: Next time you have the urge to steal a herring, you had better
think twice. You are lucky I did not have one of Duke Screndt's trained
coursers in my retinue, and this is a mere riding palfrey."
Lady Balkeese next addressed the men standing by the tripod.
"Complete your rendering of the occasion as quickly as possible. When it
is done, have it shipped to High Marshal ][osferatu's estates in Perdan
city with my compliments. Next time I am in Perdan I will make sure to
stop by and see the end results. It had better be good."
Her task complete, Lady Balkeese signaled her captain, and rode out of
the gate and down the road. Her troops fell into ranks behind her and
they passed quickly from sight.
The estate lay quiet in the wake of the troops departure. The two
painters worked hurriedly on the canvas. Breck lay on the ground, still
doubled over clutching his crotch. He had passed out some minutes ago.
The servant stood agape, not quite comprehending what he had just witnessed.
