Gauihu, Arch Priest of Abington, Count of Anchorinn, Marshal of the Queens
Blackguard, was angry.

This was normal for him. There was, after all, always an enemy to be angry
at. Criminals. Barbarians. Liars and fools!

But, today this was different. Today it was family. And today, after
receiving word from Jan Tolmy, Steward of his estates, he had had enough. He
drafted a straightforward letter, hoping to set things clear for those lower
branches of his family tree who failed to realize how things worked now.

Being a Letter to Elerik Taim Olik,

I, Gauihu, am writing to you of the matter of the Estates of the House of
Olik. I have learned that you have, once again, declared another "family
emergency" and used it to convince my steward to send you gold from our
family's coffers. Since the death of Trostian, my father, and before that
the deaths of Oleg my brother and Athys your father, I am the eldest male of
our family, and as such am entitled to govern all matters concerning our
noble line. And I am writing you to inform you that such "support" as you
have gleaned from the hard work of myself and my brothers is no longer
acceptable. Those funds are to be reserved for true emergencies as
recognized by myself, and not the whims of distant cousins on unimportant
potentates in the far east. From now on, consider yourself cut-off from
access to our treasury; my steward will no longer be complient with your
"requests," and you shall have to simply make your way in the world. Though
you be my cousin, my patience - and wealth - is not infinite.

Regards,

G.

He bound the letter in an envelope, and that in a leather sheaf, and placed
it in a knapsack. He had to concentrate to remember the name of the exact
potentate his third cousin had last been - Arcachon. He trusted that his
message would arrive, as long as the weather was good and the ship's captain
was honest. (He paid that captain an extra five in gold to ensure honesty,
as well as doing a quick background check on the captain's family. Failure
would be rewarded with their mysterious disappearance from the world.)

That ought to teach him, he thought, hoping to have settled one worry.

There was another, though. Athys II. He'd used his funds to corrupt some
local government on yet another tinpot realm, in Beluaterra. He'd have to
deal with him later, though: it was just around the next bend in the road
that the Justice Guard's encampment would be...
