Desperately, Delvin urges his horse onward on the road to Cjelegy,
though his troops are already well on their way to Avengmil. She
must be going this way, he thinks. It's the only way she could get
out in time...

At last, a figure appears just off the edge of the road. Delvin
pulls his horse up short so fast it rears, nearly throwing him off.
Controlling his horse, Delvin dismounts, and runs to the solitary
figure.

"I figured you'd try to follow me here," she says. There is a soft
snick as of a weapon being drawn. "No—" she adds, "don't come any
closer. You know I wouldn't kill you—but I can't be stopped now."

Delvin stops, but reaches out to her. "Phoebe, why?" he pleads. "Why
don't you stay, and prove your innocence? Why are you doing this now?"

Phoebe snorts derisively. "Innocence? As if anyone would believe me—
or it would matter if they did. Too may people are against me now.
Anyway, I have something more important to do. Ah—!" She shifts her
dagger as Delvin moves to go around it, and the light falls upon it.
Delvin gasps, and recoils involuntarily.

"Phoebe...where did that dagger come from? That's not..."

She smiles, twistedly. "All a part of it, love. We must part for
now. I'll see you again when I'm on top of the world...or in Aya."

Phoebe turns and disappears into the trees, seeming almost to become
one with the shadows.

Delvin calls after her, "Phoebe!" ...but he knows it is useless.

Turning, he remounts his restless horse, and rides south with tears
streaming down his cheeks.
