Numb.

That was all she felt anymore. It had been ages since Alaina had left her
rooms in Anacan. Her captains had been maintaining her duties for her, but
she did not care. Nothing mattered anymore.

All that was left was the numbness. Hunger did not touch her, and so she
never ate. Sleep would not take her, and so she lay awake all night, staring
at somethign she could no longer see. It had been thus since she heard the
news. Maltheo, killed by a blaggard and an enemy in a duel. Ever was
Maltheo's incessant honour his downfall, but that was why she loved him.

When she had heard the news all there had been was anger, an anger so fierce
her men thought her about to draw her blades on the messenger who bore the
news. She had torn her chambers apart.

Then cam grief: a grief that gripped her very lungs, made each breath come
rough and haggard for almost a tenday. He had not even been able to say
goodbye. Never again would she drink in those eyes; see that smile; feel his
lips against hers or his manhood inside of her. Then came the numbness. That
was all she knew. There was nothing left. Nothing.

Save one thing. She knew what she must do. She knew the outcome as well, but
none of that mattered anymore. One way or the other she would see Maltheo
again soon....

(Letter to Valius)
King Valius,

You are a braggard, a tyrant, a heretic, a scoundrel, and above all else a
murderer.

You murder innocent peasants in their homes. You murder and pillage and rape
a land of peacefull people who have never posed any kind of a threat to your
own.

And you murder those who leave more honour in the privy than you will ever
hope to gain.

You have taken from me the one thing I truly cared for since coming to this
island of hippocrits and honourless mules. You murdered the one thing that
made this land bearable, and beautiful.

You have taken everything from me, and now I shall take return the favour.

For whatever honour you /claim/ to hold, meet me in the dueling circle, and
let none leave until one of us stands over the corpse of the other. I
challenge you, /King/ Valius, to a duel to the death, that you may be judged
by the true gods.

I await your answer.

-Lady Alaina Selemnir
