Anton arrives at the tournament grounds at last, and smiles. He
sends his aide and scribe off to set up his tent, as he goes to
register.
On the way he looks at the people he passes, in a way he never has
before. He is not entirely certain exactly what he is looking
for...but what he sees intrigues him.
He sees jovial happiness, stressed anxiety, nervous paranoia. He
sees men boasting of their prowess (in battle and the bedroom); he
sees women laughing at them in good-natured scorn. He glances into
an open tavern door, and sees three men arguing loudly--surely the
prelude to a room-clearing brawl. Across the street, through another
open door comes the sound of loud and off-key singing: the entire bar
has joined in a rousing chorus of some Nordic song.
Through all of this, he feels a current running, an anticipation. It
touches even the calmest of seasoned veterans, and draws all thoughts
a few days ahead, when all this festivity will reach its culmination
in the contest of skill and strength they have all come here for--
Anton included.
Anton smiles. If I am to truly serve my Lady, I must be able to both
understand people and reach them, individually and in large numbers.
This is the perfect place for both.
My Lady Arelien...I will find you some followers here.
