Maltheo visited the Duke of Anacan.

"I do understand your motives, Olwe of Toren," he said without preamble. He
did that a lot nowadays, having dropped many a preamble and many a rhetoric
like so much dead flesh. "And they are good and true. And yet I have my
doubts as to whether this will be good for the people, to withdraw from the
Commonwealth rather than reforming it. Secession, I know, leads to war - and
it makes two smaller realms where one once was. Did not you speak of how
that large tyranny to our north looks down upon us? Surely they would too if
the realm was split... and yes, they would see an opportunity for expansion,
an opportunity to assist the Commonwealth in reuniting itself through
conquest."

He shook his head, sadly. "I won't try to persuade you down any one path.
That's not my place. I simply wish you to know that I've seen this all
before, and good intent and a warrior's spirit is sometimes simply not
enough to withstand the sheer force of politics."

He looked up. "Nevertheless, I shall join you in your endeavor. You, I know,
are destined for greatness. Your father spoke so. I will serve you, though
of what service a mere priest can offer, I know not."
