As the Toy made his way through the city, he noticed the general tension
that permeated the everyday life of the place. Although martial law had not
been declared, the garrison was on high alert at most of the regular
military was present in the city. On his way to the main Citadel he had to
pass through a series of gates to pass into the upper circles of the city,
and saw armed guards on station at every gate.
As he looked up at the towering walls, he could see motionless figures at
their posts on the battlements, always keeping a watchful eye on a series of
war beacons lining the great mountain roads.
He was allowed to pass the gates without incident, as there wasn't yet any
reason to seal the gates or stop anyone. Only at the last gate, the gate
into the main Citadel, was he stopped.
A guard stepped forward, looking at him. This one wore a black cloak over a
silvery scale mail, marking him as one of the Dukes personal guards rather
than a member of the regular garrison.
"State your business…"
