Darkness...pain...a dim red fog...voices drift through, distant,
anxious...then darkness again.

As the darkness fades, Delvin tries to move, but can't. He pushes at
his bed, attempting to get into a sitting position--then falls
immediately back down, startled by a horrendous scream. It takes him
some time to realize that the scream comes from his own throat.

Not long after, darkness overtakes him once again.

Delvin wanders for some time on the borders between sleeping and
waking...between life and death. He sees strange things there: the
sun and sword of Arelien...the sun blackened by an eclipse...a lion,
bound and wounded by the thorns of a rosebush...a white bird, flying
south...himself, dressed in blinding white...but the white drips
away, revealing darkest black underneath.

Suddenly, everything disappears, as if a light were doused. He is
hanging in a formless void, surrounded by nothing but darkness--but
this darkness is different than that which has gone before; there,
there was simply oblivion, but here, he is here, looking into the
darkness, trying to find the faintest glimmer of light.

At last, one appears...then another. Two points of light in the
darkness, far away. He moves toward them--he knows not how--and
eventually finds himself directly between them. He turns, looking at
each of them: one seems somehow high, while the other seems deep. He
looks long at the high one, before turning to gaze into the deep one.

All at once, the light hurtles toward him, piercing his eyes with its
brilliance.

"Aah!" he cries out. His eyes are open. He is sitting up in his
bed. He gasps for several seconds, simply content to be once
more...then memory comes flooding back, and anger twists his face.
"Elia..." he growls. He turns to the nearest healers' assistant. "I
want that backstabbing bitch to hang!"
