The sky brimmed with golden light as the last rays of the sun began to dip
below the horizon, oblivious to the destruction which had occurred the night
before. The Vandaenil were gone, the charred remains of their power stood
barren in the centre of Idapur City abandoned by the thousands which had
flocked to the location the night before. Yet, there were still two
remaining, Orphen and Luyten stood before the remains staring into the ash,
the warmth of the dying fires which had raged only a few hours before
pressed against their faces.
----
His name was Silus, a man from Lasop City and responsible for the
construction of many of the wonders which dotted the Nahadian landscape,
great spires and halls of many mirrors and stained glass, but he was also a
master of natural beauty as well, an artisan whose skill could deliver a
perfect unison of the garden and the edifice. Great arbours within the parks
and gardens of Nahad, were also a notch upon his riddled belt. This was the
man that Luyten sought to build a palace upon the remnants of the corrupt.
----
A man of sober disposition and equally sober clothing approached from the
rear of the two, although Orphen ignored this newcomer, Luyten turned to
greet him.
"You must be Silus" Luyten said, a smile stretching across his face "Welcome
to Idapur City."
"Greetings King Luyten, I am glad to be of service to the King of Greater
Aenilia," Silus countered with a stiff bow "And what could the King of the
lands of the Aenil want from an architect?"
Luyten's smile dimmed as he turned wordlessly back to wreckage which stood
before him. He raised a hand and indicated to the great pile of blackened
wood and smoking ash,
"What do you see Silus?" he questioned quietly.
"Nothing my Lord" Silus replied as he peered into the haze "although it
appears that this is only a building recently demolished, and it was not
torn down by professionals..." he continued, his voice trailing off as he
saw some still smoldering torches which were littered on the outskirts of
the mass.
"Exactly Silus my friend nothing," Luyten ignored his apparent nervousness
and turned back to the architect "I want you to do something about it. The
last of the Vandaenil are gone. This was the symbol of their power, and in
its place, I would like to construct something that shall represent the
power of the true Mark."
"But why me my Lord?" Silus questioned with a slightly trembling voice as he
continued to gaze into the ash, his sight taking in the surroundings,
finally reaching the iron brazier which stood only a few metres off, he
thought he saw the glint of cauterised metal.
"Because you are the best Silus, I want this palace to soar, I want
foreigners to come from thousands of miles around to marvel at its
magnificence" Luyten's quiet voice rising like a crescendo as he turned back
to the charred remains, his eyes glazed over as he pictured the palace
before him, "It shall be the centre of Greater Aenilian power and a beacon
of new hope for all that were oppressed by the corrupt heresy of the
Vandaenil. Money is of no object, spend what you must, the walls must shine
out across the city with a golden light and the windows must reflect a
myriad of bright colours in the radiant sun."
Silus looked startled for a moment, but then took a step foward and kneeled
before Luyten,
"It would be my honour to construct this wonder for you my Lord and by your
leave, I shall depart now to draw up plans. Construction will begin
immediately!" Silus cried as he lept up and hurried off down the street.
