*The steady gloom of the night surrounded them as the army of Aenilia passed
through the region of Erahol, and then back on to the city of
**Idapur**from whence they had come only a few days earlier. Ironic,
Luyten thought as
his infantry marched past the remnants of the encampment he had delivered
Caerid's declaration of war to the soldiers and people of Aenilia.*
*A wind blew, but it was no longer the strong cool breeze which had swept
about the scarlet tents a few days ago as they marched to war, now it was a
chill draught which swirled about them and whipped at them, stinging their
faces with its harsh fingers. Luyten peered around the landscape, a rolling
faceless mass of dark grass. Even his brightly clad soldiers, and those
other men-at-arms around him, were strangely colourless.*
*Looking further out to the East his gaze passed over the grassy expanse and
to the dark mass beyond, the sea. The ocean had always been a comfort to
Luyten, when peering into the velvet blue expanse, he always seemed to be
most at peace, it was these times that he felt the presence of the Aenil at
its strongest.*
"Take care of my dear friend" *Luyten whispered softly as he communed with
the spirits that had become his life *"He knew not his folly, and his
mistakes have been forgiven."
*Suddenly, a messenger appeared in the distance, riding at full pace toward
the slowly moving mass of men and arms. As he came it could be heard that he
was shouting something, but over the prevailing wind it could not be heard
until he drew nearer.*
"Aenil...new…King….lands…Orp…." *the messenger's mouth moved but Luyten
could not hear, he drew nearer and finally the gravity of his words took
effect* "Aenilia has spoken, and the new King of these lands shall be
Orphen."
*A great cheer erupted from the ranks of the soldiers as they heard the news
of their new King. But Luyten was troubled, for it seemed that an ill-omen
had befallen Greater Aenilia.*
"Hmmm….the Founder of the Church, now sits on the throne of the secular
realm" *Luyten muttered to himself in a louder tone* "I fear what could come
from this, for this realm was created to separate church and state…"
"What was that my Lord*?" the nearby Jacen, Luyten's faithful lieutenant
overheard him.*
"Nothing Jacen my friend, long live the King, for there is none other that I
would trust to lead Aenilia. But I wonder if this does not fly in the face
of what we accomplished when this realm was founded"* Luyten spoke in a
hoarse whisper to his confidant.*
"It does my King, but as you said, Orphen is a good man and there would be
none other whom you would trust to…." *Jacen said but was cut off by his
Lord.*
"Yes Jacen, you are right. Long live the King, long live…the…." *but his
voice trailed off as his mind was troubled by these events.*
