The bright morning sun covered the vast grasslands of Erahol in a golden
light which reverberated throughout the hundreds of men-at-arms assembled on
the plains. Their pennants snapped in stiff sea breezes which rushed across
the plain and their spears and swords glinted. At the centre of the camp
stood the magnificient pavillion of the King of Aenilia, and around? More
tents of a similar deep red and gold hue stood in a circle, enshrining the
camp in a bright raiment. These were first of the Aenilian nobles to gird
themselves in the colours of the realm which was only formed just a few
short months ago.
The camp was alive with commotion as rumors and gossip ran through the
troops stationed around their Lords like wildfire. "War", was the word which
everyone cried as the clamour of men and horses rose to a fever pitch. "We
are to Svunnetland my comrades!" sub-commanders bellowed to their soldiers
as the army formed up for movement, awaiting only their Lords. A rustle, and
from the central pavillion of the King emerged the Nobles of the realm. All
were dressed in armour and their red and gold surcoats blended with the
bright raiment of the surrounds.
At the head of the group was the Arch-Priest of Aenilia and Duke of Nahad,
Sir Luyten. As he came before the assembled army he spoke:
"Soldiers of Aenilia!" he cried "Today is an historic day! For today shall
be handed down to posterity as the moment when Greater Aenilia saw its first
war. The League of Anacan is beset on all sides by many, and we cannot go to
their immediate aid. But we can do what we can to prevent more realms from
attempting to profit from their plight. Thus we march to Svunnetland!"
A great cry erupted from the assembled troops, their armour, swords and
spears glinting in the sunlight like ears of corn, tossed in the tempest of
war.
"But we lament this not, for now we are given the chance to serve two
purposes. Long has Aenilia been restricted by its geography and its poor
leadership, but now is the time when can stand firm to the aid of our allies
and lead the people of the Aenil into new prosperity! Look out toward the
lands of Svunnetland, out there is immortality for those who can take it,
but more importantly out there are more to be converted to the faith! Now is
the time for us to march to glory my comrades! An army which marches in the
name of the Aenil cannot be beat but shall only have victory! For Aenilia!
For the King! And for the Aenil!"
Further cheering erupted from the ranks of the army as the commands from
their officers bellowed out to them. The troops turned and began the march,
the journey was short, and victory lay at the end. But Luyten remained a
while longer.
"What becomes of us? he muttered, peering out toward the trail of the army
which marched in the distance, and then east towards the mountains of
Ahael"War has come, and the Far East is no longer safe from its sting.
Soliferum
come against us, I only hope that our brothers in Ethiala will stand by us,
that we may together forge peace...."
Luyten then mounted his horse, and urging his mount onwards he too took to
the path south, the path to where many soldiers of Aenilia, would never see
their homes and wives again.
