Anton sits down in an overstuffed, underused armchair in the manor in
Lothruin. He sighs deeply and buries his face in his hands. "Bright
Lady, guide me with Your light..." he whispers softly. "Let my feet
follow the path You have chosen...let my way...be Your will."

He stands, goes to the table, and looks at the paper on it. It lacks
only his signature.

I hate to leave them like this...but... He shakes his head. I'm
only making things worse at this point. I can't concentrate on the
war...not with Her eyes filling my head.

This is the right choice.

This is the only choice.

He picks up the pen lying beside the paper, and signs his name to the
bottom.

--
I do hereby relinquish my position as High Marshal of Minas Ithil and
the attendant position of Marshal of the Army of Shanandoah, as I am
finding that I am no longer able to adequately carry out the duties
required of my positions. I will, for the time being, retire to
Lothruin, and join the homeland defense force, and continue to teach
my students, to the best of my ability. Though this decision grieves
me, I believe it is for the best, for me as well as for Minas Ithil
and our allies.

In my place, I would recommend Lady Katherine or Count Connor. Both
have an excellent grasp of strategy, and I believe that either would
make a good High Marshal for our kingdom.

I remain, under the Sun and his Majesty King Dead Angel3,

Anton Anaris
Count of Lothruin
--

He takes the paper and gives it to his waiting scribe. "See that
copies are sent to everyone in the Kingdom, and all the Generals of
the continent. Then...take the rest of the day off."

The scribe smiles at this last, and runs off with the paper to carry
out Anton's orders. Anton sinks down into the armchair again,
leaning back his head and closing his eyes.

My Lady...it is done. Now, can I rest?
