Yes, if you're after pure roleplay, then Cantr II (www.cantr.net) is the
only game I've found that's as good as Battlemaster in that respect, and
was the one I thought of for this thread. Personally, I find
Battlemaster better because it has a more interesting theme (medieval
knights compared to just plain people wandering around making a slightly
obscure combination of things), because the site runs a lot more
smoothly (Cantr has had problems for well over a year with slow-loading
pages), and because I like the descriptive-roleplay better than the
first-person-roleplay (Cantr, in effect, is just an
IC-face-to-face-conversation, whereas battlemaster has letters and, most
differently, the descriptive Roleplay message option). If you really
love the roleplay bit of battlemaster, you might enjoy that too, though.

If you're more keen on the teamwork, battles and strategies in
battlemaster, and roleplay is just something that gets in the way, you
have to scroll past to get to the important stuff, and people moan when
you muddle up OOC with IC, then the best free game I've found is War of
Empires (www.warofempires.com) which is completely not a roleplaying
game, but completely is a game where you work and fight in teams. War
of Empires has the most excellent Admin I've seen in a game, and gets
your adrenaline going in a way battlemaster can't, but suffers from one
single problem that Battlemaster doesn't - to do really well, you need
to be online a lot - at least every few hours and probably more.

I've tried various others, but for roleplay, Cantr II is the most
immersive, for excitement/battles/strategy/gameplay, WoE is best, but
Battlemaster is the only game I've found which has such an excellent
combination of creative roleplay with logical/mathematical
battles/strategy, and that's why Battlemaster is the one I'd choose if I
played only one.
