>>So, how do we eliminate "gangbang" wars?

I think it would be difficult to eliminate them altogether without GM intervention, but I think imposing penalties for the offender and/or benefits for the victim would definitely make it a much rarer occurance.

>>if you get hit by your neighbour that's three
>>times your size that's just tough luck. But this ganging-up,
>>especially when it isn't necessary from a pure military perspective

Ok, so using these guidelines, we could say:

When Realm A declares war on Realm B, a calculation checks Realm B's status. If Realm B is already at War with a realm (or realms) with regions totalling X% more than Realm B has ...

1) ... the nobles of Realm A would suffer Honor and/or Prestige losses for "gangbanging".

2) ... Y# of regions in Realm A go rogue in protest of the "gangbang".

3) ... Realm B is given aid via game mechanics (with some made-up RP explanations). Maybe additional militia units, maybe additional sums of gold, maybe production boosts in Realm B's regions; amounts could vary depending on how badly they're outnumbered.

4) ... each person in a position of power in Realm A (probably High Council & Dukes, maybe Region Lords) has a chance of being assassinated. Nobody likes a "gangbanger".

Just a couple of thoughts.
