The average joe does not know who Caligula is. I think there are only a few
singular names that are well known, like Cleopatra, but even there I think
it's ok because it's still a name that is used to name girls a lot. Also
Rasputin is not that well known, and is a good medieval name anyway.
I think so long as the name is not well known, or used in today's world to
name people, it is fine. Merlin would be bad, there will always be one
Merlin, but Charlemagne, Columbus, Leonardo, all seem like great names to me
for a medieval setting. They sound better than 'Bob' or 'Hank' that's for
sure.
This shouldn't be about policing the references, but whether the names break
the spirit of the game. In my opinion Caligula, Rasputin, and Temujin do
not do this because I while I know a tiny bit about the historical figures,
it will not affect how I see the characters because the names really aren't
that strong history-wise.
