Perhaps the members of the guild should actively encourage new 
membership among the nobles of their realm. Word of mouth is 
perhaps the best way to spread the knowledge and participation 
in a guild.

Been there, done that. Except that when I got there I was 1 gold 
short of the 15 gold entrance fee, so I never got to join anyway!
