I don't see it as total crap.  He's explained why he did what he did, 
and that explanation makes sense.  The issue is that it's circumventing 
game mechanics.

I would say that if he'd just asked Tom first whether it was ok, and Tom 
had said yes, then it would have been fine.  It's rather close to 
abusing a loophole, and the way to make it 'legit' would have been to 
confirm with Tom that it was acceptable to abuse his game mechanic for 
the good of RP.  And then, if Tom had accepted that, Tom could have 
announced to everyone that it was ok, so that everyone could be doing 
the same thing.
