I don't think we need to abolish them all together, though #2 is an
intriguing idea. I really like #1 though, it's true, you don't need
alliances when not at war and it would be more like the system I am familier
with from fantasy novels (EG. King is not 100% who will show up and how many
they might bring, and there's always some disloyal vassal who either doesn't
show up, joins the enemy, or is late and usualy get's beaten up during or
afterwards. It's a lot more interesting then the what happens now and would
bring more treachery and diplomacy. (well, hopefully))
