Well, think of it like discovering the new world. People knew there
was stuff out there but it was all embellished and twisted, fountains
of youth, pure golden cities, and what not. Of course there are
things there, but there just isn't enough hard knowledge. Even after
Marco Polo (an advy? :P) returned from china, presuming he actually
made it there, it's not like Europe suddenly could map all Chinese
cities and rivers and mountains etc.
