character RP the offer or just ask for 10%?

I'd imagine the RP could be somewhat on the lines of :

Duke Nose-in-the-Air,

I come to you with humility asking if you would consider taking me on as 
your loyal knight.  I have, in the past, been a general, a ruler and a 
fill in the blank.  You can see that my knowledge and services could be 
very useful to sometime in the future.  I would humbly ask for 10% of 
your region's tax collection in exchange for my services.  Please check 
with your clerks and let me know if this arrangement is acceptable to 
you.  I can supply letters of reference from other high standing nobility.
