I have never taken the mile distances in BM to be really equivalent  
to real-world miles.  They just don't make a lot of sense.  That  
would make the *diagonal* dimension of Atamara be only a little more  
than half the width of the US, and unless Tom wants to correct me,  
I've always had the impression that it was meant to be *roughly* the  
same size as North America (largely due to the long-obsolete "New  
World" moniker, I think).

I would take the size of each half of Dwilight to be comparable to an  
average real-world continent, myself.
