Except, adventurers aren't ordinary commoners. They have links
(however tenuous) to real noble houses, sometimes powerful ones.
People might not treat them with *respect*, per se, but they would at
least pause and consider whether maltreating someone might anger (or
annoy) a real noble. Which is fortunate, since that's how many
adventurers are currently treated: it's a simple thing to look and
see, "Oh, this person's other character is the general of my realm.
I think maybe I'll pass on beating this adventurer up." (It would
make things rather interesting if it were not possible to find out
what family an adventurer is associated with)

Besides, with the use of items, nobles rely on these adventurers and
bargain with them. It's one thing to have them bargain to buy an
item, as they have considerable power in that arrangement -- it's
entirely another to force them to hand over items that need repairs.
Even kings have to talk to peasants if they want that fancy sword
repaired. It's a wonderful game balance mechanic, but it does force
certain practical concerns on RP.
