They *are* peasants.

Just because they have some noble blood doesn't make them noble-- 
however much they might like to think so.

Right up until the point where you click that "Change Class" link to  
make your adventurer a noble, he (or she) *is* a commoner.  Nobles  
should treat you as such, and other commoners certainly will--though  
they might very well treat you with respect for saving them from the  
horrible monsters and undead.

Also remember that claims aren't a matter of what the common folk  
think--they're a matter of what the official records say.  It doesn't  
matter *how* much the people of a region like you, they can't make  
you their Count.
