Not all nobles went to war.

It's more than likely that the other, "invisible" nobles are busy 
trading, holding court, gossiping, sending their younger nobles to train 
with the local bureaucracy, or doing other things of a similarly RPable 
but not actually game mechanic affecting matter that nobles did in the 
middle ages.
