Allow me to say I've had the pleasure of being at the total mercy of
a region lord, while being King. It ROCKS. Seriously, it's fun. While
Hireshmont is never really without options, it was so much fun having
the dynamic power struggle/balance in Irombrozia between Dionysus
(Count of Cagamir: the realms' food supply) and Hireshmont(King).

Basically, it meant both Dionysus and Hireshmont had to really be on
their toes, get to know each other, learn to work with each other,
and refrain from red paper as much as possible. It was only through
timely actions of a powerful foreign realm that Hireshmont was able
to get an upper hand enough to get Dionysus to back down peacably.

Seriously, rulers and bankers: if you want to improve your game
experience, and that of the people in your realm, I highly recomend
you back away from the region lords and dukes, let them manage their
own food deals as much as possible, and treat them as strong powers
in your realm, not just managers.

Please forgive my little personal narrative there, I just wanted to
say that the types of dynamics Tom is talking about do (occasionally)
exist, are workable and useable, and are fun.
