Wholeheartedly agreed. In the rare instances where this did actually occur
in medieval times, I highly doubt it was structured or handled quite in the
same manner. And "free speech" was still a few centuries in the making.
As for vulgarity, people here are looking at the term in its modern
connotation, much like the same situations we have with anachronistic
governments and "rights". Vulgar, in Middle English understanding, means
"of or belonging to the common people, everyday," as well as "belonging to
or associated with the lower orders."
I definitely agree that not properly addressing a noble of high standing, or
alternately, associating with a peasant adventurer could and should be
considered vulgar.
