Roman nationalism is a bit of a stretch.... I agree that the Romans had a
great deal of national pride and strong belief in their identity, however
the term 'Romans' means everyone living in Rome. The rest of the empire
didn't get a say on policy, or government, even if they were on the Italian
peninsula. The plebeians only got a vote if they were in Rome, and only
Roman nobility were Patricians and got on the Senate. Government offices on
outer provinces mostly consisted of dictator-like figures elected by the
Roman government who acquired taxes and oversaw development. Why members of
the Italian peninsula didn't even become full citizens of the republic until
very late, very very late. The Roman Empire was all about making Rome great,
not all their territory, not the people close by, not even Italy, just Rome.
