Fear is a great motivator. Also, starving and malnourished peasents aren't
ideal soldiers. Weakness sets in, and those who were capable of fighter are
much too sickly, demoralized, or too concerned with their families to fight.
Starvation is a tactic that is as old as war. Aidid used it extensively in
Somalia in the late 80's- early 90's.
