Then why not make it so they still lose the position, but are  
*forced* to refuse it for, say, 2 weeks? a month? after they heal?

If they are forced to wait until the next monthly elections (or what  
would be the next monthly elections, if they were in a realm with  
elected positions), that would seem to at least put it back somewhat  
in the control of the game...
