Because
a) it wasn't invented until several hundred years after the time period 
the game is set in
b) it makes for less interesting gameplay. In-Realm conflicts (political 
in nature) are still way below what I originally envisioned 6 years ago.

Why does it have to be patriotism to a REALM? Why not to a duchy or 
region? Or, hey, a religion?


That said, realms are not going to be abolished, and you can still 
identify with them if you like. But their dominance in the game is 
stronger than it should be.
