If Nighthelm attacked, then murderous didn't matter because zonasa joined
into defend their ally Sol.

You will lose control of a city if a fresh unit is recruited there, and
becomes 'stationary'.  It is possible that was what really happened, and is
normal and part of the trouble of sieging a capital.
