I think you're making a big logical leap here--or perhaps I should
say, *illogical* leap.
There's a huge difference between being cruel enough to your peasants
or serfs that they hate you, and acting like every other noble, who
basically treated them like an animal--and after all, it was hardly
universal in any era to be cruel to animals, either. The very best
lords would have treated their peasants like well-liked pets.
*No one* would have treated them like anything remotely approaching
equals.
Anyone who did, and got caught at it, should, as someone else
suggested, lose *all* their honour and prestige...since, after all,
if they're acting like peasants are their equals, maybe *we* should
act like they're equal to peasants, too.
