[Discuss] Federations

Question. I know Federations are the highest level of diplomacy, but what
exactly does that mean. The effect of leaving a federation is well known,
but some of the other details are obscure. For example
I vaguly recall hearing that one will side with their Federation over
an ally under certain situations, something like:
Realm A is at war with B and Federated with C. Realm B and C are allied. All
are in a region and C joins in the fight agasint B with their federation.

Is this true, or am I inventing fancies? And what else is there. Sadly the
wiki has revealed nothing telling at a quick glance, so I thought I'd ask
here.
