How about some more improvement options? Say a priest may spend many hours
and 'dramatically inspire' the population, which will have the same result
as a family investment, proportional to the size of the religion. Or allow
investments in regions by the religion out of the gold in the temple,
proportional to the influence of the religion in total (based in part on the
spread of the faithful). Make the payoff more than the investment, as
'donations' could be brought in, the further spread the further the
donations come in from. Restrict it from happening too often in the same
realm, though.
However - do we want to encourage religions to play more of a part and have
multi-realm religions, OR do we want to encourage realms to have more than
one religion, OR both? We seem to be flip-flopping between the two. A lot of
RP is based on a religiously fanatical or observant realm, so it seems the
former would be more what we want to encourage.
We could also throw in some instability if a religion is based only in a
single realm or area - something like 'the people are disillusioned with the
faith and are flocking to other, more widespread faiths that will lead them
spiritually better than the political tool they currently follow'.
