On this line of thought though...

Wasn't the change to Equipment that added both Attack/Defense originally put
in place because Tom liked the suggestion to be able to repair/upgrade
individual equipment?  You want better Attack, buy better weapons from the
weaponsmith.  Better Defense comes from getting better armor from the
armorsmith.  Something along that lines.  It was long enough ago that I
don't even know where to begin looking in the archives for the discussion.
