I'm just guessing at the moment, since I have no "news" for any of my
characters.  Can anyone confirm that this new feature on the family page
bypasses the messages and goes straight to the status screen?

I'm pretty sure this was suggested awhile ago, and was a good idea.  That
lets people who don't have as much time go straight to the important stuff,
while still letting them know they have new messages to read when they get
more time.
