It doesn't matter the time period of the name change. Look at S.
Africa though, the Africans owned it, then the Dutch, then I believe
the English came in and they all had drastically different names for
it.

Of course you'd want to change the name! Why keep the name with
negative connotations that the people you didn't like and overthrew,
used?
