I'm such a dork, but...
Portugal became a power by being an early colonizing power of Africa and
later Brazil.
When Spain united and became powerful, Portugal arranged a royal marriage
between the two, so relations were high.
When England passed Spain as the major power, Portugal passed the Meuthan
agreement and became an English vassal for protection.
So Portugal was always maneuvering to side with who could protect them,
which is good diplomacy.
No real point here, I just like history.
