I would say Terrain would be a great idea. This would give a army a tactical
advantage over the opposing army as well as more info for role playing. (ie:
the battle has taken place on a hill, army1 has a slight advantage)
In real life the general/marshal/etc would try and pick the best position to
battle on. Notably the battle of hasting when the Saxons took their stand on
a hill. Though in the end the Saxons lost because they were to anxious to
charge the fleeing Normans.
You could implement terrain by allowing the marshal to pick what kind of
terrain they would like to be on. They would *try* and choose the terrain if
they can since maybe both opposing marshal might be trying to pick different
terrains. If they found a suitable spot then like a hill then they would get
a bonus. Of course it may not just be trying to look for a spot it may
because the opposing army just wanted to fight you faster.
It could say something like this:
Your army is now deployed on a small hill while the enemy is on lower
ground.
The opposing marshal(and nobles) might get something like this:
Your army has not found a hill because the enemy has already got it.
The terrain might help with the roleplaying since you could actually know
where your fighting(*Thankfully we had found a good spot on the hill for our
archers, a crag of rocks on the top where our archers could kill almost any
person.*). Also picking the right terrain might give you some better
tactics. If your on a hill the archers might be able to shoot at you easier
and you'll have a wider range of view if you were just on the ground. You
try and choose the terrain for your army unless the other army got it.
Digging in shouldn't be much of an issue since if you are dug in you would
have already chose the spot where you would want to be.
